Hello writers!

Hello and welcome to the “Writer’s Workshop – Scientific Writing for Computer Science”. This is already the 7th edition of the Writer’s Workshop at the FIN but — drum roll please — the first english edition. On popular demand we will not only read and write in English as we have done it in former editions of this course. But we will also speak english in class. This is really exciting and I think we will have a lot of fun together.

Don’t be afraid, we are all in the same boat. None of us is a native speaker and that again makes things easier. We will all fish for words and phrases and we will help each other out. In the last semesters we achieved a really relaxed and fun environment to work in and I am pretty sure this will happen  this this semester, too.

This blog will be our central writing hub for this course. Use it as your creative playground, write whatever you like, post links, pictures, thoughts, videos*. It is also the place to write your homework assignments or ask questions about last class. This is your personal space to juggle with  words, play with sentences and throw around ideas.

One main feature of a blog are comments. You can post comments to all the posts and we want to encourage you to use this feature extensively. Reading is essential for your own writing skills. So read the posts! Giving and receiving feedback is essential for the development of your writing. So comment! We hope that by using this blog we will reduce the fear of the blank screen (or blank page for that matter) and help you build a daily writing routine. Writing every day will help you  facing the writing challenges which might wait for you during your studies.

This semester we will have support by two tutors: Josi and Sebastian. They are writing tutors and they will help you with your homework and all things reading and writing. After the first session we will assign a tutor to each student to work with during the semester.

We hope for lively discussions — online and offline — and are curious for your texts, images, comics, links and other findings.

Looking forward for a great semester!

Katrin

P.S: Please bring pen and paper to class. You might need it 😉
